Current trend in interactive furnitures and roomware

چکیده
Information Technologies until recently mainly have been focused on very constrained artifacts like desktop computers, set-top boxes or handheld. There is now a shift towards integrating technologies in everyday artifacts, ranging from tables to walls and even carpets or kitchen furniture. In this paradigm, the computer disappears and objects take advantage of computation capabilities to support new usage like collaborative work or learning. In this approach, the world and its artifacts are then interfaces to information and collaboration among people. This new field is referred to as “roomware” (Streitz et al.,s 1998) or interactive furniture. It addresses the design and the evaluation of computeraugmented room elements like doors, walls, furniture (e.g. tables and chairs) with integrated information and communication technology.

Roomware for Cooperative Buildings: Integrated Design of Architectural Spaces and Information Spaces
In this paper, we introduce the concepts of “cooperative buildings” and “roomware” and place them in the context of the integrated design of real, physical, resp. architectural spaces and virtual, resp. digital information spaces. By “roomware” we mean computer-augmented things in rooms, like doors, walls, furniture, and others. The general approach is detailed via examples from the i-LAND proj...

iv the concept of sharing as known from CSCW can be extended to function as a guiding principle for UbiComp application design. This novel design approach helps ensuring the extensibility and flexibility that is required in ubiquitous computing. (2) A flexible software architecture identifies essential abstractions that support the development of synchronous applications in “roomware” environme...

In the past, a central mainframe computer provided terminals for many users. In the current age of the personal desktop computer, there are one or more computers for each person. It’s only in rare cases that these computers work together to jointly provide functions. In the future, computational power will be ubiquitous. In such an environment, devices that support humans interacting with infor...
متن کاملArchitecture of BEACH: The Software Infrastructure for Roomware Environments
Shared environments beyond the desktop supporting face-to-face collaboration put new requirements on software: Users interact with multiple devices, and collaborate using different kinds of devices. The configuration of the devices is changing frequently due to the demands of new work practices in organizations which will be characterized by a high degree of dynamics, flexibility, and mobility....
متن کاملInvestigating the role of personal and public information devices and their combination in meeting room collaboration
We report about an empirical study that investigates the role of different "roomware" configurations on the products and processes of meeting room collaboration. The configurations were realized by different combinations of providing computers and a large interactive electronic whiteboard. In this study, 48 subjects working in teams of four were assigned to three experimental conditions: four w...
